History of the Jamaican Orthopaedic Association
The Jamaican Orthopaedic Association (JOA) is a professional organization comprising orthopaedic surgeons practicing in Jamaica, as well as graduates of the Doctor of Medicine (DM) program at The University of the West Indies. As an affiliate of the Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ), the JOA collaborates on various initiatives to enhance medical knowledge, standards, and practices within the country. The association actively organizes conferences and outreach programs aimed at promoting continuous medical education and improving the quality of orthopaedic care in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
Formation and Early Years (1994–1995)
The Jamaican Orthopaedic Association was established in September 1994 with just eight practicing orthopaedic surgeons in Jamaica:
- Prof. Sir John Golding
- Dr. Winston Chutkan
- Dr. Christopher Rose
- Dr. Kenneth Vaughan
- Dr. Grantel Dundas
- Dr. Warren Blake
- Dr. Francis Lindo
- Dr. Emran Ali
The founding meeting took place at The Liguanea Club of Jamaica, coordinated by Dr. Winston Chutkan, marking the official inception of the association. Sir John Golding was appointed as the first President, with Dr. Winston Chutkan as Vice President and Dr. Kenneth Vaughan as Secretary-Treasurer. The association’s headquarters was established at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), with Ms. Jacqueline Dixon serving as the first Administrative Secretary.
During its formative years, the JOA initiated annual educational meetings in the form of weekend conferences, inviting international orthopaedic surgeons to share their knowledge and expertise with the local medical community.
Growth and Development (1995–Present)
In 1995, the association faced a great loss with the passing of its founding President, Sir John Golding. Following his death, Dr. Winston Chutkan assumed the role of President.
On January 27–28, 1996, the first Annual Symposium was held under the leadership of Dr. Chutkan, focusing on the theme “The Hand.” This event set the precedent for the JOA’s continued commitment to annual weekend conferences, workshops, and outreach activities.
Over the years, the JOA has expanded its mission by engaging in outreach programs to Type B and Type C hospitals, ensuring that orthopaedic care reaches underserved areas. The association remains dedicated to advancing medical education, collaborative learning, and enhancing the standard of orthopaedic care in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
